Abstract

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus and non-communicable diseases are major public health concerns. And life expectancies of human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients have been increasing with the rapid implementation of antiretroviral therapy which has led to an increase in comorbidities with diabetes mellitus among the human immunodeficiency virus population. Objective: The objective of this wasto assess the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its associated factorsamong people living with human immunodeficiency virus. Method and MaterialsHospital based cross-sectional study was conducted among people living with human immunodeficiency virusin publichospitalsfrom April to June 2024 in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. Data was collected from randomly selected 272 adult outpatients through an interviewer administered questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS-25 and descriptive statistics were computed to determine the magnitude of Type 2 mellitus among people living with HIV and Binary logistic regression was performed to identify factor associated with outcome variables. Variables having P-value <0.2 were taken to multivariable logistic regression and statistical significance were declared at p-value of <0.05 in final model. Results: Among the total participants 97.05% of them were completed this study, overall Type 2 mellitus among people living with HIV scores with health service provided in the ART department of Addis Ababa public hospitals was 15.5% at 95% CI: (11.0- 19.0). The factors that were statistical significantly associated with type 2 diabetic mellitus were patients who mostly eat randomly his food [AOR (95% CI) 4.60 (1.529-13.851)], who were screened for cholesterol [AOR (95% CI) 0.32 (0.131-0.771) ], who got information about connection between human immunodeficiency virusand type 2 DM from support group (other person) [AOR (95% CI) 5.02 (1.119-22.489] and who believe that there is factors to develop Type 2 diabetes mellitus [AOR (95% CI) 0.14 (0.050-0.394)]. Conclusion: The Prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus among people living with human immunodeficiency virus had higher prevalence. And the patients who eat randomly his diet, patients who were screened for cholesterol, patients who got information about connection between human immunodeficiency virusand type 2 diabetes mellitus and participant who believe that there are factors to develop Type 2 DM were significantly associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus among people live with human immunodeficiency virus
