Abstract

Background: Suicide is a common problem worldwide and the magnitude is high especially in countries where mental illnesses are prevalent and psychiatric service is poor. Bipolar disorder with high rates of suicide ideation and completion is 25-50%, 10-30% and 6 15% respectively for patients with bipolar disorder compared to a general population estimate of about 1%. suicidal ideation and among individuals with bipolar disorder often result in a significant psychological, social and financial burden upon individuals and families. Objective: To Assess the Prevalence of Suicidal Ideation and associated factor among peoples with bipolar disorder at Amanuel Mental Specialized hospital . Method: An Institution based cross-sectional study wasconducted from May 2024 at Amanuel Mental Specialized Hospital among people with bipolar disorder. Systematic random sampling technique wasused to get total of 422 samples of patients. The data wascleaned. SPSS version 26 was used for data entry and analysis. table and figure binary and multivariable logistic regression analysis wasused with a 95 % confidence level wascarried out. In the final model, variables with P<0.05 wasconsidered as statically significant. Result: the prevalence of suicidal ideation among patients with bipolar disorder was 18.2% (95% CI; 14.2-22.1). In multivariable logistic regression being female (AOR=2.43, 95% CI, 1.57-3.75), Family history of suicidal ideation, (AOR=1.67, 95% CI, 1.19-2.99), depressive phase (AOR=2.27, 95% CI; 1.38- 3.74) and having medical illness (AOR=1.89, 95% CI; (1.09- 2.55) were significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Conclusion: prevalence of suicidal ideation and associated factors was assessed in this study. Being female, having medical illness, having a family history of suicidal ideation, and depressive phase were significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Recommendation:- Early diagnosis and effective management are required to improve the lives of those suffering from suicidal ideation
