Knowledge, Practice and Associated Factors towards Stroke Prevention among Hypertensive Patients at public hospitals of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2024

Abstract

Introduction: Stroke is a global health problem and a most common cause of morbidity, mortality and disability in both developing and developed countries. The most significant modifiable risk factor for stroke in the world is hypertension. When necessary precautions and actions are taken that are derived from knowledge of the disease's risk factor, the incidence of strokes could be reduced by about 80%. The individuals' knowledge of the potential signs and symptoms of stroke, its risk factors, and their practices. Objective: To assess the knowledge, practice and associated factor toward stroke prevention among hypertensive patients in public hospitals, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2024. Method: An institution based cross- sectional study was conducted on 316 participants using semi-structured, interviewer administered questionnaire from March 1, 2024 to March 30, 2024. Data were coded and then enter to Epi data v 4.6.0.6 and export and analyze by using SPSS version 27. Descriptive statics using frequencies, percentages, tables, figures were used to describe stroke. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify associated factors of Knowledge status toward stroke and preventive practice about stroke at p-value <0.05. Result;-A total of 316 hypertensive patients participated in this study. The overall good level of knowledge towards stroke and preventive practices in hypertensive patients were found to be 55.3% (95% CI: 51.4, 60.1). Similarly, 57.6% (95% CI: 53.2, 61.9) of the participant had good stroke prevention practices. Married hypertensive patients (AOR=3.192(95% CI: 1.175, 8.677)), single (AOR=5.098(95% CI: 1.211, 21.461)) and divorce (AOR=18.107(95% CI: 4.482, 73.151)) and Hypertensive patient with secondary school (AOR=3.373(95% CI: 1.187, 9.583)) significantly associated factors with knowledge of status stroke. Hypertensive patient with age 30-50years (AOR=22.481(95% CI: 5.926, 85.279)), Hypertensive patient with occupational status farmer (AOR=230.611(95% CI: 19.687, 2701.321)) and government employee (AOR=7.1192(95% CI: 1.452, 2.593)) and Hypertensive patient with educational status diploma (AOR=4.297 (95% CI: 1.568, 11.779)) significantly associated factors with preventive practices of stroke. Conclusion:-This study showed that high stroke prevention practices and knowledge of stroke 57.6%, 55.3% respectively. Age, occupational status, marital status, educational status, were significantly associated factor with stroke knowledge and preventive practices.
